About me
Clare Kenyon (aka RedLippedAstro) is an astrophysicist and science communicator with a flair for lifting the veil on the mysteries of the night sky, space and everything in it. Her research takes her deep into the heart of very energetic galaxies called quasars to the central supermassive black hole within.
Clare’s an ambassador for women in STEM, and is really passionate about outreach and media – including public talks, tutoring, mentoring television, radio, social media and podcasts. She relishes any opportunity to challenge commonly held stereotypes, particularly those held by young women, of how women in STEM ‘look’ and ‘act’. Clare believes in giving everything a go and not being afraid to try something new or follow your interests to new horizons.
Highlights include:
- Recognised as a Science & Technology’s Superstar of STEM (2020-22)
- Writing for Cosmos Magazine, The Conversation and Pursuit Magazine
- Profiled in April 2022 edition of MiNDFOOD Magazine
- Coordinating and leading university outreach programmes such as Telescopes in Schools and the Kathmandu Astrophysics Schools
- Inaugural Ambassador of the Astronomical Society of Victoria (ASV) and profiled in the bimonthly newsletter, Crux
- A ‘go-to’ media commentator for the ABC (ABC News Channel’s ‘The World’ and ABC Radio – various channels), Broadsheet and many other media outlets
- Invited speaker/moderator at various events (e.g., Abbotsleigh (Speech Day 2022), Key Note at Australian Coating’s Show (Surface Coating Australia 2019), Moderation of ‘Design beyond Earth: the future of Earth observation‘ panel at Scienceworks for Melbourne Design Week 2022)
